  • 08/05/2008 - C & G lift the Minor Charity Cup

C & G completed their inaugural season as a Cheltenham League Club by lifting the Minor Charity Cup this evening following an exciting final at Kayte Lane, the home of Bishop's Cleeve FC.

Facing FC Barometrics Reserves, the Division 5 champions, C & G raced into a two goal lead after 25 minutes of the first half, courtesy of goals from Steve Lowe and Scott English but their opponents pulled one back just before the interval through Russell Anderson. The scores were brought level by Dave Mellor midway through the second half and then Danny Roberts seemed to have won the match for FC Barometrics Reserves, until a Lee Wintle header for C & G, in the last minute of normal time, took the game into extra time. When the additional half an hour began, C & G took the lead almost immediately, when James Evans scored at the near post from Ross Mahoney's corner but Russell Anderson conjured up another equaliser for FC Barometrics Reserves with 5 minutes to go that meant that a penalty shoot out was needed to decide the destination of the trophy.

Both sides missed twice in their first four penalties but C & G made it 3-2 with their fifth kick and this proved to be decisive when FC Barometrics Reserves final spot kick cannoned off the bar.
